Almost every beard that ever got past stubble went through the itch. It's the number one reason guys quit and shave it all off around week two or three. Here's the thing though: the itch isn't a sign your beard isn't working. It's a sign it is. Push through this stretch and you're on the other side of it for good.
Why it itches
When you shave, the razor cuts each hair at a sharp angle, leaving a stiff, pointed tip. As those hairs grow out, that sharp end curls back and drags against your skin — and for a lot of us, it doesn't just scratch the surface, it curls right back into it. That's the same mechanism behind razor bumps, and it's why the itch phase can hit harder for Black men than the generic beard advice online admits.
Underneath that, your skin is drying out. The longer your hair gets, the more it wicks the natural oil away from your skin and up the strand. So you've got sharp hair tips on one side and a thirsty, flaky layer of skin on the other. That combo is the itch.
How to get through it
The move is simple: stop the scratching and fix the dryness. Two things.
First, keep the skin under the beard moisturized — not just the hair. Most guys oil the beard and never touch the skin. Work a few drops of beard oil down to the root with your fingertips, morning and after every wash. That's what calms the itch directly.
Second, wash less aggressively than you think. Hot water and daily stripping make the dryness worse. Two or three washes a week with a gentle beard wash, cool-to-warm water, is plenty during this phase. A conditioner softens those sharp tips so they stop poking you.
A few more things that help: don't scratch with your nails — it tears skin and invites bumps. Pat, don't rake. And give it time. The itch usually peaks around week two to four and fades once the hair is long enough to lie flat instead of curling into your skin.
The stack that gets you through
This is exactly what our Beard Oil is for — a few drops to the skin twice a day is the single most effective thing you can do here. Pair it with the Conditioner to soften the tips, and you've covered both sides of the itch. If you want the whole routine, the Shampoo & Conditioner set runs the wash side of it.
